Dangers of not having enough sleep

Everyone has a particular phenotype. It is known that 70% of the population sleeps between 7 and 8 hours a day .

On March 16, 2012, the sleep day with the theme of “sleep and performance” highlighted the significant health risks for individuals who lacked sleep.

An American study based on 20 years showed that out of a population of several thousand workers, there was an increase of 24 to 30% of people who decreased their sleep time below 6 hours.

If it is easier to give advice to recover sleep naturally , the misdeeds of lack of sleep on health are less known.

Consequences of lack of sleep:

Tests have been done on rodents depriving them of sleep. These died between 2 to 3 weeks. If we can not take these risks on humans, it has nevertheless been shown that lack of sleep leads to more or less significant consequences.

In the laboratory, we have studied the absence of sleep on the man of a few days.
The results are convincing because this lack can cause among other things:

  1. Hallucinations
  2. Loss of memory
  3. Behavioral disorders
  4. Disturbances of judgment

Sleep allows to rest and dream but also to regulate the temperature (it is the homeostasis), the energetic expenses and plays an important role on the immunity.

If all this is disturbed the consequences are numerous.

What effects after a sleepless night?

We all experienced one or more sleepless nights.

Studies have shown that one or more sleepless nights already have consequences on our behavior and our health, the main signs of which are:

  1. An increase in the number of errors
  2. An increase in reaction time
  3. A reduction of the visual field
  4. Disturbances of judgment
  5. A decrease in the recognition of emotions
  6. A decrease in planning
  7. A mental viscosity: that is to say rather confused ideas, not clear

It is observed that 1 to 2 hours of sleep less each day leads to an increase in errors perfectly correlated with the number of days of sleep less.
Basically, the less you sleep, the more mistakes you make.

Other consequences of lack of sleep are

If you sleep less than 6 hours a night, for several weeks, the consequences can be really serious:

  1. Cardiovascular consequences
  2. Consequences on physical recovery capabilities
  3. Lack of sleep changes certain hormones involved in the appetite (Ghrelin that increases the appetite for sugars and fats), leading to a change in metabolism and therefore weight gain especially in the youngest
  4. Increased risk of insulin dependence and therefore a risk of developing diabetes in the long term.

As you can see, sleep is more than good for health and lack of sleep damaging for living beings.
