Antonio Halili, mayor of the Philippine city of Tanauan, made the headlines two years ago for ordering drug suspects to parade in public. He still comes to the forefront of the local media but this time to announce his assassination.
He was shot dead by a sniper on Monday, media reports said.
According to the ABS-CBN, the incident took place during a flag ceremony at the Tanauan City Hall. The shooter, who would be hiding in nearby bushes, shot the mayor in the chest.
“The official was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital,”the media quoted the police as saying .
Halili became famous in May 2016 when he forced drug trafficking suspects to shame in public marches, despite protests from human rights groups.
The media also reported that the mayor was himself on the watch list about his alleged involvement in the drug trade.
